Is Polished Concrete a good floor option for basements?

Posted at April 16, 2007 by Teresa Morrow

I was asked this question when I was attending an online chat at Business & Learning room (www.businessandlearning.com) last Wednesday, April 3rd. I had the opportunity to talk about our company and I had asked the ladies in the room if they had any questions.  One lady asked me about what I thought about having polished concrete floors vs. wood floors for her basement. My initial reply was another question to her. I asked her if the basement was also being used as a laundry room. Her reply was yes. This allowed me to give her a more complete answer based on her needs for her home.  If the basement was going to be used also as a laundry room, it would be more beneficial to her to have the concrete polished rather than installing wood floors. This is due to the possibility of having plumbing issues  and the moisture generated by washing machines and dyers. The moisture would most likely have an affect on the wood floors over time and the concrete wouldn’t be affected. Also, she could have the concrete be dyed (colored) to look like wood, if that is something she chose.  The maintenance on a polished concrete floor is much less than a wood floor, especially when having to deal with a high moisture level area such as what she was talking about for her home. buy cialisbuy cialisbuy levitrabuy levitrabuy propeciabuy propeciabuy somabuy somabuy levitrabuy cialisbuy propeciabuy levitrabuy somabuy cialisbuy propeciabuy levitrabuy somabuy cialisbuy levitrabuy propeciabuy soma

Clean Kitchen and Bath Area Rugs

Posted at April 11, 2007 by Teresa Morrow

Cleaning kitchen and bathroom area rugs can be a fairly easy task to complete, however, it is important to be sure to look at the care tag before cleaning.  Most kitchen and bathroom rugs can be machine washed.

However, before just tossing them into the washing machine, here are a few tips:

  • Stains should be taken care of by using a laundry stain remover.
  • Do not mix dark and light rugs in one wash. Wash them seperately.
  • Rugs with dark colors should be washed in warm tempature with a mild detergent on a delicate cycle.
  • Rugs with lighter colors should be washed in hot water with a mild detergent.
  • Be sure the rugs are rinsed thoroughly in the rinse cycle or rinse them yourself.
  • Either let the rugs air dry or you can place them in the dryer on a low setting.  This should be determined by the type of fibers the rug is made.

Cleaning & Maintain Marble Floors - Clean, Dry, Rinse, Polish, Seal

Posted at April 5, 2007 by Teresa Morrow

Helpful tips to marble floors:

  • Place coasters under glasses and put plastic under cosmetics on marble surfaces.
  • Use rugs to cover marble floors.
  • Powdered cleansers will scratch or damage marble.
  • Be sure to know that even weak acids (such as vinegar & orange juice) can damage marble. Mop up spills immediately and thoroughly rinse with water.

v     STEP 1: Apply a damp clean cloth and buff dry with micro fiber cloth for  the regular ongoing cleaning. v     STEP 2: For tough stains, apply a neutral, nonabrasive cleaner (such as acetone, hydrogen peroxide or clear ammonia) with a clean cloth and buff dry with a micro fiber cloth.v     STEP 3: When it comes to polishing the marble, apply a marble  polish containing tin oxidev     STEP 4: Protect marble with a good stone sealer.v     STEP 5: When it comes to scratches of any depth: it is best to call a professional

Question for Ask Eddie-Floor Cleaning & Restoration Expert

Posted at by Teresa Morrow

Q: I am thinking of taking up my carpet and wondered if you had any suggestions on preparing the floor afterwards for parquet flooring, and any hints on laying and caring for it.

A:  Well, talking about a loaded question but a good one.  Here are my suggestions:

  • When removing carpet, be sure to remove the tac strip and nails as well before laying the new floor.
  • Have the subfloor resurfaced properly to give you a smooth surface to lay the parquet flooring onto. If there are spots on the subfloor that need resurface, it is best to call a professional to complete this job.
  • It is best to hire a licensed professional wood floor installer.

Caring & daily maintenance for a wood floor

  • Sweeping and mopping is best.
  • Remember, water is a wood floor’s worst enemy.
  • Use a nonabrasive cleaner with a clean cloth remembering to keep the moisture on the floor to a minimum.
  • If you have scratches on the floor, try a wood “marker” or “pen” found at your local hardware store to “color” in the scratch because most of these have wood stain as an ingredient.

Cement or Concrete Floor Dyeing

Posted at April 4, 2007 by Teresa Morrow

Cement floor dyeing it is called or concrete dyeing,  the process is as such:

The cement or concrete floor process is very similar to sanding wood as the use of different “grits” of diamonds or segement disks on a specialized floor machine are used to eliminate (or grind) the top layer of the surface (like using sand paper). A trained concrete floor care professional realizes when it is time to change to the next grit. The concrete floor professional can either stop the grinding or “sanding” process at a matte finish look (called honed finish) or will take it to a shiny look (called high gloss finish). The concrete grinding process can either contain about 7 passes with the diamonds or up to 14 passes with the dimonds. This depends mostly on the condition of the concrete slab or surface before the process begins. If the concrete is newly poured and troweled properly, then the process will be shortened quite a bit. However, if there is another flooring, such as ceramic tile or carpet, on top of the slab, this can make the process take longer due to the addition of possible floor glue or mastic that will need to be removed before starting on the grinding of the concrete surface.

Now, when talking about dyeing or coloring the concrete or cement floor, this is done near the end of the grinding process. The customer would pick out a desired color and the concrete floor professional will add the color. Depending on the darkness of the desired color, it may need to be applied more than once on the concrete surface. When the grinding and dyeing process is done, then  a product called a sealer on the concrete to aid in the resistance of stains and spills.

How to Remove Stains on Granite

Posted at April 3, 2007 by Teresa Morrow

To remove a stain on granite, you need to use the appropriate cleaning method for the specific type of stain. One type of stain remover to try: mix a cup of flour, 1-2 tablespoons of dishwashing liquid with water to make a thick paste.

  •
    • Put it on the stain, cover with plastic wrap, and let it sit overnight.
    •  Scrape away the mixture with a wooden utensil and rinse.
    •  If the stain is oil-based (e.g. grease, oil), use hydrogen peroxide in the paste instead of dishwashing liquid
    • Try a mixture of hydrogen peroxide mixed with a couple drops of ammonia for an organic stain (e.g. coffee, tea).
    •  Use acetone to remove ink or marker stains from darker stone. On light-colored granite, use hydrogen peroxide on these stains.
  • To remove or repair a scratch in granite, it is best to ask a professional.
  • Use drink coasters for all glasses, especially those that have alcohol or citrus juices in them.  Many common foods and drinks contain acids that will etch or dull the stone surface.
  • It is best not place hot food items directly on the stone surface. Place trivets or mats under hot plates, china, ceramics, or objects that possible could dull or scratch the surface.
